Kirby was brought into Nevada Humane Society in early March, and stayed until almost July! He was brought in while overweight, barely being able to stand up on his own. Our staff put him on a steady diet to help him in his weight loss-journey, even though he hated it. In addition, staff made sure to move Kirby’s food bowl around the room so he had to walk around to get to it. After some positive motivation and notable weight loss, Kirby still wanted to lounge more than he did jump around. When Kirby went up for adoption, NHS staff was a little worried. Not many people are able to take on a case like Kirby’s, especially because he has such a big cat-itude. (He only wanted to be pet on his terms.) Luckily, on the last day of June, Kirby found his forever home.
Kirby’s new mom immediately fell in love with him. She reached out to NHS to share Kirby’s Happy Tail, telling us that he is doing great in his new home. According to his new owner, Kirby is a doll, but very strong-willed. (Oh, and he snores. A lot.)
At his most recent vet visit, his right knee was severely arthritic. After getting a new anti-inflammatory shot, Kirby can now trot around like a youngster. but for now, he still has trouble getting up and down. He will get one shot a month until he loses weight. Then, it’s possible that he won’t need the shot as often. Kirby’s new owner firmly believes Kirby’s mobility will only get better when he has less tummy to haul around.
He has lost one pound since being in his new home (measured the first week of being adopted), with more to come! His beautiful orange fur is getting groomed daily and looks very pretty. He loves being combed and has only protested twice about it — when it didn’t conform to his napping schedule.
“My other cat Gracie has been slow to accept him, but he doesn’t seem to mind much at all, as he’s very calm and non-confrontational with her,” said Kirby’s owner. “She just can’t understand why she has to have her dry food on the rim of the bathtub instead of on the normal floor feeding area.”
Kirby always follows his new mom around and wants to be in the same room with her. Kirby loves wandering and exploring, with his bed in the closet near tons of comfy blankets. Kirby’s owner is also proud of the fact that he always uses the litter box.
“My thanks to all the staff who were so helpful in the adoption process!” – Kirby’s new mom.
