Lost & Found Pets in Carson City

The pets listed below have recently come into our care in Carson City. They were either found by kindhearted individuals who couldn't locate their owners or were picked up as strays by our Humane Enforcement Officers. All lost pets are held for five days to give their owners a chance to reclaim them. After this period, unclaimed pets become available for adoption, allowing them to find a new loving home.

Humane Enforcement Lobby: Monday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. & Tuesday - Saturday 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Understanding Impound Fees vs. Daily Cost of Care Fees

When an animal enters our care, there are two different types of fees that may apply. These fees serve different purposes and are assessed separately.

Impound Fees (One-Time Administrative Fee)

  • Impound fees apply only to stray animals

  • This is a one-time fee

  • It covers the administrative cost of intake, including:

    • Processing the animal into our system

    • Required documentation and reporting

    • Staff time associated with intake and reunification efforts

  • The impound fee does not cover the cost of daily care

  • Protective Custody (PC) and Bite Quarantine (BQ) cases do not receive impound fees

Fees For Daily Cost of Care

  • Daily Cost of Care Fees help cover the ongoing, daily cost of caring for an animal
  • These costs include:
    • Housing and cleaning
    • Food and enrichment
    • Daily staff care and monitoring
  • Daily Cost of Care Fees accrue daily for each individual animal while they remain in our care
  • The longer an animal stays with us, the higher the total fees will be
  • For the health and safety of all animals in our care, any animal entering our shelter may receive core vaccinations as part of standard intake protocols. The owner is responsible for the cost of any vaccinations administered while the animal is in our care.

Daily Cost of Care Fees for Animals in Our Care

When the Fees Apply

These fees may apply to animals that enter our care as:

  • Strays

  • Bite Quarantines (BQ)

  • Protective Custodies (PC)

24-Hour Grace Period

In accordance with City ordinances:

  • Fees are not charged during the first 24 hours

  • If an animal is reclaimed within the first day, no daily cost of care fee will be assessed

Daily Cost of Care Fees by Species

Fees are charged per animal, per day, after the initial 24-hour period:

  • Dogs $20 per day
  • Cats $10 per day
  • Small Animals $10 per day
  • Fowl $15 per day
  • Livestock $25 per day

Example: If a dog remains in our care for five days, Daily Cost of Care Fees are assessed for each day after the first 24-hour grace period.

Our goal is always to reunite pets with their families as quickly and compassionately as possible. Clearly distinguishing between administrative intake fees and daily care costs helps ensure transparency while allowing us to continue providing safe, high-quality care to animals in our community.

If you have questions or need assistance reclaiming a pet, our team is here to help.

For transparency, these policies are guided by Carson City Municipal Code and applicable City ordinances. You can review the relevant ordinances governing animal services, impoundment, and boarding requirements here.

A Brief History About NHS Carson City

In August 2014, City Manager Nick Marano announced a partnership between Nevada Humane Society (NHS) and Carson City Animal Services (CCAS) to improve animal services in Carson City. NHS took over CCAS on October 1, 2014, aiming to make Carson City a high- save community with a goal to improve the lives of all healthy and treatable animals.

When NHS assumed control, CCAS's live release rate was only 55%. This quickly increased to 95% and has remained there since the Carson City Campus opened in October 2016. Funding for the Carson City Campus came from a 1/8 percent sales tax, donations from NHS donors, and the Carson Animal Services Initiative (CASI). Maddie’s Fund® contributed $383,000, while the Petco Foundation added $100,000 to support the shelter and care for adoptable dogs.

Carson City Dog Licensing Information

Licensing your dog is required by law in Carson City. If your dog gets lost, a license tag helps Humane Enforcement Officers (or anyone who finds your dog) contact you quickly. Plus, it can reduce the need for rabies treatment if your dog does happen to bite.

You must license your dog in Carson City when:

  • You move to Carson City with your dog (within 30 days)
  • You get a new dog (within 30 days)
  •  Your puppy turns three months old

Dog licensing fees:

  • $8.00 for spayed/neutered dogs
  • $25.00 for unaltered dogs

Note: Renew your dog's license before it expires to avoid late fees.

To license your dog:

  • Proof of Rabies Vaccination: This must be current and given by a licensed vet. Rabies vaccinations last one to three years, depending on your dog's age and vaccination history.
  • Proof of Alteration (if applicable): If your dog is spayed or neutered, bring documentation from the vet clinic that performed the procedure to pay the reduced fee.

Remember to:

  • Attach the license tag to your dog's collar or harness.
  • Renew the license annually to ensure your dog's safety and compliance with Carson City laws.
