This three-pound, ten-year-old pup was found wandering in the desert as a stray in Lyon County. In addition, Mertle had absolutely no teeth and needed to be on a strictly soft foods diet. Because we didn’t know her previous behavioral history around other dogs, our team made sure that Mertle went to a home where she’d be the only pet, too.
Mertle, also known as Rabbit, was available for less than a day before getting adopted from our Carson shelter by her new family. She was the perfect #Underdog for us to feature as the lead for the Subaru Loves Pets campaign.
Senior dogs are important to adopt and care for in a shelter because they are less likely to be destructive or need intensive behavioral training. Read more of our reasons to adopt out senior pets at our blog here.
Samantha and her husband Jay adopted Mertle after seeing her on our social media feeds and her story truly impacted them.
“Our kids renamed Mertle to Squish and she has absolutely adjusted well since coming home.” -Sam, Mertle’s owner
We are so happy for Mertle and her new family!
