Two Step: A Tail about Man’s Best Friend

What better way to spread holiday cheer than by sharing a magical story about true love? Some stories stay with us long after they’ve ended, ones that highlight the power of love, the human-animal bond and remind us that sometimes things are simply meant to be.

This is Two Step’s story. This sweet 1.5-year-old pup came to us as a stray, found wandering the streets by Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS). When he first arrived at Nevada Humane Society, he was scared, alone, and nearly blind. His past was a mystery, but despite his tough start in life, his gentle demeanor and wagging tail spoke volumes. It was clear that this little dog had so much love to give. 

Though Two Step faced the challenges of blindness, he quickly adapted and became a staff favorite. His sweet nature, brave spirit, and affectionate personality won the hearts of everyone he met. One of his biggest fans was Brendan, a college student who was in Reno for a physical therapy rotation.  Brendan stopped by the Reno Campus every day, for over two months, to visit Two Step. He gave him companionship, cuddles, and endless hope. In return, Two Step gave him something priceless: unconditional love. 

Over the course of the two months, Brendan grew closer to Two Step, and though he desperately wanted to adopt him, he couldn’t commit until his residency was over. He made the difficult decision to wait and hoped that when the time was right, Two Step would still be there. 

And when fate is involved, sometimes things work out in the most beautiful ways. By the time Brendan’s residency came to an end, Two Step was still waiting, just as patiently as Brendan had hoped. On Brendan’s very last day in Reno, he visited NHS one final time, and there was Two Step, tail wagging as if he knew they were meant to be together. The bond that had formed between them over those two months was undeniable, and Brendan didn’t waste another moment. He adopted Two Step that very day.

Today, Two Step is living his best life as Brendan’s perfect travel buddy. Together, they’ve hit the road and embark on adventures across the country. Despite his blindness, Two Step navigates the world with remarkable confidence, and he even has his own Instagram, where his followers can experience his incredible journey from a scared, blind stray to a beloved companion.  

Two Step’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of patience, love, and a little bit of fate. It’s also a testament to what we can accomplish with the help of this incredible community.
