Nevada Humane Society Reaches Capacity

Nevada Humane Society Issues Community Call to Action for Pet Adoptions

The Nevada Humane Society urgently needs the community’s help to find homes for stray and surrendered cats and dogs.

According to Trent Bingham, Director of Operations, both of their locations have reached critical capacity. “We are at a critical capacity for both dogs and cats. This is peak kitten season, so we’re finding many kittens that need to be brought into our foster programs,” Bingham explains.

Bingham also highlights the critical situation for dogs. “Our Reno facility is at 91% capacity for dogs, and our Carson facility is just under 80%.”

Several factors are contributing to this trend, Bingham notes, including the rising cost of living. “The costs for dog and cat food have skyrocketed, making pet ownership unaffordable for many. When people realize they can’t provide for their pets, they choose to relinquish them to us because they want what’s best for the animals.”

Additionally, the organization experienced an influx of animals around the 4th of July holiday. “Many dogs go missing around then. Some find their way back home eventually, but others don’t,” Bingham says.

The Nevada Humane Society is encouraging community members to help by fostering or adopting. They are holding adoption events on Saturday, July 13th, from 11 A.M. to 6:30 P.M. at both their locations. Adoption fees are waived for animals that have been at the shelter for at least 14 days.

Please note that many puppies and kittens are not yet available for adoption.
