NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, October 12th, we have 432 animals in our care – this is 19 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 51 at our Carson Campus, 201 at our Reno Campus, and 180 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 64% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 64% capacity.

Intakes

205 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 63 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (5 less animals from the previous week), 25 Strays (2 less animals from the previous week) and 6 Strays too young for adoption (17 less animals from the previous week). We also transferred 56 cats, 40 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 7 animals were transferred in from other partners. 

Outcomes

101 cats and 62 dogs were adopted last week – this is 5 less cats, 16 more dogs, and 3 fewer small animals compared to the previous week. 3 cat was reunited with their owners (2 more than last week). We were able to reunite 10 dogs with their owners (2 more compared to last week).
We had 11 animals humanely euthanized last week. (4 dogs and 7 cats) 3 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 8 were due to illness or injuries. 

Community Support

Last week we received 47 surrender requests for cats, 69 surrender requests for dogs and 20 surrender requests for small animals. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment. 

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/12/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/05/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
