NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, October 5th, we have 413 animals in our care. We have 50 at our Carson Campus, 175 at our Reno Campus, and 188 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 53% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 55% capacity.

Intakes

223 animals came into our campuses last week, 13 more than the previous week. NHS received 68 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (26 more animals from the previous week), 27 Strays (16 more animals from the previous week) and 23 Strays too young for adoption (5 more animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 52 cats, 16 dogs, and 3 small animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 0 animals were transferred in from other partners. 

Outcomes

106 cats, 46 dogs, and 3 others were adopted last week – this is 9 more cats, 37 fewer dogs, and 1 fewer small animal compared to the previous week. 1 cat was reunited with their owners (1 more than last week). We were able to reunite 8 dogs with their owners (3 fewer than last week).
We had 16 animals humanely euthanized last week. (10 dogs and 6 cats) 8 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 6 were due to illness or injuries. 2 were for quality of life.

Community Support

Last week we received 42 surrender requests for cats, 53 surrender requests for dogs, and 7 surrender requests for small animals. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4 days for cats and 5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment. 

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/05/2025. 
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 09/28/2025. 
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
