NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, September 7th, we have 541 animals in our care – this is 34 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 60 at our Carson Campus, 224 at our Reno Campus, and 257 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 54% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 65% capacity.

Intakes

271 animals came into our campuses last week, 57 more than the previous week. NHS received 58 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (5 more animals from the previous week), 10 Strays (3 less animals from the previous week) and 23 Strays too young for adoption (5 more animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 116 cats, 27 dogs, and 6 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 0 animals were transferred in from other partners.

Outcomes

125 cats, 51 dogs, and 5 others were adopted last week – this is 6 more cats, 19 less dogs, and 1 more other animals compared to the previous week. 1 cat was reunited with their owners (no change from last week). We were able to reunite 9 dogs with their owners (5 less than last week).   
We had 7 animals humanely euthanized last week. (5 dogs and 2 cats) 5 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 2 were due to illness or injuries.

Community Support

Last week we received 40 surrender requests for cats and 60 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 7 days for cats and 8 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment. 

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 09/07/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/31/2025. 
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
