NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 12pm Monday, September 1, we have 507 animals in our care – this is 12 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 41 at our Carson Campus, 201 at our Reno Campus, and 265 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 51% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 67% capacity.

Intakes

214 animals came into our campuses last week, 24 less than the previous week. NHS received 82 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+28 animals from the previous week), 18 Strays (+5 from the previous week) and 18 Strays too young for adoption (-23 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 53 cats, 41 dogs, and 1 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

Outcomes

119 cats, 70 dogs, and 7 others were adopted last week – this is 3 less cats, 28 more dogs, and 6 more other animals compared to the previous week. 1 cat was reunited with their owner (1 less compared to previous week). We were able to reunite 14 dogs with their owners (no change compared to last week).

23 animals were humanely euthanized last week. (15 dogs, 7 cats and 1 small animal) 9 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 14 were due to illness or injuries.

Community Support

Last week we received 90 surrender requests. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4 days for cats and 7 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/31/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/24/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
