NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 12pm Monday, August 25th, we have 519 animals in our care – this is 18 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 48 at our Carson Campus, 222 at our Reno Campus, and 249 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 67% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66% capacity.

Intakes

238 animals came into our campuses last week, 8 less than the previous week. NHS received 54 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-27 animals from the previous week), 13 Strays (+1 from the previous week) and 41 Strays too young for adoption (+5 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 74 cats, 27 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 13 animals were transferred in from other partners.

Outcomes

122 cats, 42 dogs, and 1 others were adopted last week – this is 10 more cats, 11 more dogs, and 6 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. 2 cats were reunited with their owners (2 more compared to previous week). We were able to reunite 14 dogs with their owners (8 more than last week).

22 animals were humanely euthanized last week. (7 dogs, 14 cats and 1 small animal) 6 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 16 were due to illness or injuries.

Community Support

Last week we received 108 surrender requests. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 3 days for cats and 7 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment. 

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/24/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/17/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
