NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, August 17th, we have 501 animals in our care. We have 66 at our Carson Campus, 210 at our Reno Campus, and 225 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 60% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 59% capacity.

Intakes

246 animals came into our campuses last week, 4 less than the previous week. NHS received 81 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (32 more animals from the previous week), 12 Strays (-10 animals from the previous week) and 46 Strays too young for adoption (23 more animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 44 cats, 15 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 0 animals were transferred in from other partners. 

Outcomes

112 cats, 53 dogs, and 1 other were adopted last week – this is 19 more cats, 1 more dog, and 10 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. No cats were reunited with their owners (3 less than last week). We were able to reunite 6 dogs with their owners (7 less than last week).   

We had 10 animals humanely euthanized last week. (8 dogs and 2 cats) 7 were due to unsafe/dangerous behaviors. 3 were due to illness or injuries.

Community Support

Last week we received 31 surrender requests for cats and 54 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4 days for cats and 7 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment. 

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/17/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/10/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
