NHS here with your Monday Metrics update along with some key information about last week.
Population & Capacity
As of 8 a.m. Monday, July 21st, we have 536 animals in our care – this is 18 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 72 at our Carson Campus, 213 at our Reno Campus, and 251 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 62% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 57% capacity.
Intakes
208 animals came into our campuses last week +43 more than the previous week. NHS received 66 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+20 animals from the previous week), 10 Strays (-6 animals from the previous week) and 37 Strays too young for adoption (+8 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 66 cats, 21 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 2 adults, 1 adolescent, and 1 puppy were transferred from City of Elko to alleviate pressure on their resources.
Outcomes
141 cats, 58 dogs, and 14 others were adopted last week – this is 16 more cats, 7 fewer dogs, and 8 more other animals compared to the previous week. No cats were reunited with their owners (3 fewer than last week). We were able to reunite 9 dogs with their owners (5 fewer than last week).
5 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans. 8 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for quality of life.
Community Support
Last week we received 38 surrender requests for cats and 41 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 1 day for cats and 4 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

- Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 07/20/2025.
- Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 07/13/2025.
- Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
- Strays: Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
- Good Samaritan Strays: Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
