Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 8 am Monday, June 30th, we have 733 animals in our care – this is 14 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 69 at our Carson Campus, 314 at our Reno Campus, and 350 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 53% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 75% capacity.

Intakes

233 animals came into our campuses last week – 13 more than the previous week. NHS received 50 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+6 animals from the previous week), 20 Strays (+7 animals from the previous week) and 39 Good Samaritan Strays (+3 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 61 cats, 25 dogs, and 2 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

Outcomes

113 cats, 49 dogs, and 7 others were adopted last week – this is 24 fewer cats, 18 fewer dogs, and 5 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 1 cat (+0 from the previous week) and 8 dogs (-1 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 3 cats were humanely euthanized for medical reasons. One dog was euthanized for aggression to animals, two for aggression to humans, and two were euthanized for quality of life.

Community Support

Last week we received 43 surrender requests for cats and 46 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 1 day for cats and 10 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

• Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/29/2025.
• Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/22/2025.
• Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
• Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
• Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
