NHS Metrics Monday 06/16/25

Population & Capacity
As of 8 am Monday, June 16th, we have 730 animals in our care – this is 30 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 57 at our Carson Campus, 284 at our Reno Campus, and 389 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 53% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 79% capacity.
Intakes
223 animals came into our campuses last week – 12 more than the previous week. NHS received 44 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-16 animals from the previous week), 10 Strays (+0 animals from the previous week) and 22 Good Samaritan Strays (+12 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 94 cats, 30 dogs, and 4 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.
Outcomes
156 cats, 59 dogs, and 4 others were adopted last week – this is 13 more cats, 1 fewer dogs, and 4 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+0 from the previous week) and 8 dogs (+3 from the previous week) with their owners.
Last week, 7 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 8 neonatal cats died unassisted in our custody. Four dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and one for aggression to humans and animals.
Community Support
Last week we received 38 surrender requests for cats and 58 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 8 days for cats and 3 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
Definitions:
- Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/15/2025.
- Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/08/2025.
- Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
- Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
- Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
