Population & Capacity
As of 8 am Monday, June 9th, we have 760 animals in our care – this is 37 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 60 at our Carson Campus, 277 at our Reno Campus, and 423 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 57% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 81% capacity.
Intakes
211 animals came into our campuses last week – 59 fewer than the previous week. NHS received 60 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+32 animals from the previous week), 10 Strays (+4 animals from the previous week) and 10 Good Samaritan Strays (-50 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 88 cats, 26 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.
Outcomes
143 cats, 60 dogs, and 8 others were adopted last week – this is 59 more cats, 17 more dogs, and 2 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+3 from the previous week) and 5 dogs (+1 from the previous week) with their owners.
Last week, 9 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 7 neonatal cats died unassisted in our custody. Four dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and one for aggression to humans and animals.
Community Support
Last week we received 41 surrender requests for cats and 64 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 8 days for cats and 7.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
Definitions:
- Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/08/2025.
- Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 06/01/2025.
- Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
- Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
- Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
