Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

Population & Capacity

As of 8 am Monday, May 26th, we have 721 animals in our care – this is 87 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 62 at our Carson Campus, 200 at our Reno Campus, and 549 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 74% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 65% capacity.

Intakes

283 animals came into our campuses last week – 43 more than the previous week. NHS received 62 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+14 animals from the previous week), 23 Strays (+16 animals from the previous week) and 60 Good Samaritan Strays (-23 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 76 cats, 32 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

Outcomes

72 cats, 62 dogs, and 3 others were adopted last week – this is 30 fewer cats, 4 more dogs, and 3 fewer other animal compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 2 cats (+2 from the previous week) and 8 dogs (+6 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 15 cats, and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 14 neonatal cats died unassisted in our custody. 3 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 for aggression to humans and animals.

Community Support

Last week we received 40 surrender requests for cats and 66 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 13.5 days for cats and 10.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 05/25/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 05/18/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
