Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, May 12th, we have 598 animals in our care – this is 58 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 47 at our Carson Campus, 163 at our Reno Campus, and 368 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 59% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 71% capacity.

278 animals came into our campuses last week – 60 more than the previous week. NHS received 65 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+4 animals from the previous week), 23 Strays (+16 animals from the previous week) and 77 Good Samaritan Strays (+11 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 68 cats, 24 dogs, and 5 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

113 cats, 64 dogs, and 10 others were adopted last week – this is 43 more cats, 14 fewer dogs, and 5 fewer other animal compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 0 cats (-2 from the previous week) and 6 dogs (+2 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 6 cats, 5 dogs, and one ferret were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 4 neonatal cats died unassisted in our custody. 4 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 for aggression to animals.

Last week we received 35 surrender requests for cats and 83 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 6.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

• Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 05/11/2025.
• Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 05/04/2025.
• Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
• Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
• Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
