Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, April 21st, we have 477 animals in our care – this is 88 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 56 at our Carson Campus, 144 at our Reno Campus, and 277 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 67% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 78% capacity.

253 animals came into our campuses last week – 60 more than the previous week. NHS received 55 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+0 animals from the previous week), 21 Strays (+6 animals from the previous week) and 66 Good Samaritan Strays (+37 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 51 cats, 35 dogs, and 1 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

63 cats, 76 dogs, and 5 others were adopted last week – this is 1 fewer cats, 27 more dogs, and 12 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 1 cat (+1 from the previous week) and 7 dogs (+0 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 5 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 4 neonatal cats died unassisted in our custody and one rabbit died due to complications during surgery. 4 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans.

Last week we received 53 surrender requests for cats and 87 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 10 days for cats and 6 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 04/20/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 04/13/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
