Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, April 7th, we had 351 animals in our care – this is 29 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 40 at our Carson Campus, 135 at our Reno Campus, and 176 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 41% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 70% capacity.

172 animals came into our campuses last week – 29 fewer than the previous week. NHS received 66 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-11 animal from the previous week), 20 Strays (+11 animals from the previous week) and 17 Good Samaritan Strays (+3 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 20 cats, 25 dogs, and 11 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

57 cats, 59 dogs, and 7 others were adopted last week – this is 7 fewer cats, 10 fewer dogs, and 4 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 0 cats (-1 from the previous week) and 8 dogs (+1 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 2 cats and 3 dogs were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and one neonatal cat and one neonatal dog died unassisted in our custody. 2 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans.

Last week we received 75 surrender requests for cats and 113 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4 days for cats and 8 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 04/06/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 03/30/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
