Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, March 17th, we had 267 animals in our care – this is 8 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 40 at our Carson Campus, 123 at our Reno Campus, and 104 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 57% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 71% capacity.

174 animals came into our campuses last week – 30 more than the previous week. NHS received 74 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+10 animal from the previous week), 5 Strays (-13 animals from the previous week) and 1 Good Samaritan Strays (-3 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 25 cats, 39 dogs, and 1 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

69 cats, 68 dogs, and 12 others were adopted last week – this is 11 more cats, 19 more dogs, and 3 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 5 cats (+2 from the previous week) and 5 dogs (-12 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat was humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 dog died during surgery. 2 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans.

Last week we received 32 surrender requests for cats and 72 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 3 days for cats and 5.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

• Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 03/16/2025.
• Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 03/09/2025.
• Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
• Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
• Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
