Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, March 3rd, we had 254 animals in our care – this is 8 fewer animal compared to the previous week. We have 41 at our Carson Campus, 115 at our Reno Campus, and 98 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 53% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 59% capacity.

169 animals came into our campuses last week –  32 more than the previous week. NHS received 65 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+9 animals from the previous week), 18 Strays (+12 animals from the previous week) and 2 Good Samaritan Strays (+2 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 14 cats, 38 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

64 cats, 76 dogs, and 11 others were adopted last week – this is 10 more cats, 22 more dogs, and 7 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+3 from the previous week) and 12 dogs (+5 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and one dog died unassisted in our care. 3 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans and 2 dogs were humanely euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week we received 36 surrender requests for cats and 75 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6.5 days for cats and 8.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 03/02/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/23/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
