Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, February 24th, we had 262 animals in our care – this is 1 fewer animal compared to the previous week. We have 39 at our Carson Campus, 131 at our Reno Campus, and 92 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 59% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 61% capacity.

137 animals came into our campuses last week – 11 fewer than the previous week. NHS received 56 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+2 animals from the previous week), 6 Strays (-10 animals from the previous week) and 0 Good Samaritan Strays (-3 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 30 cats, 16 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

54 cats, 54 dogs, and 18 others were adopted last week – this is 2 fewer cats, 17 fewer dogs, and 4 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 0 cats (-2 from the previous week) and 7 dogs (-10 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat was humanely euthanized for medical reasons.

Last week we received 32 surrender requests for cats and 57 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 7 days for cats and 9 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/23/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/16/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
