Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, February 10th, we had 281 animals in our care – this is 7 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 48 at our Carson Campus, 146 at our Reno Campus, and 87 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 66% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 61% capacity.

173 animals came into our campuses last week – 32 more than the previous week. NHS received 70 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+10 animals from the previous week), 15 Strays (+4 animals from the previous week) and 0 Good Samaritan Strays (+0 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 26 cats, 29 dogs, and 4 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

53 cats, 81 dogs, and 8 others were adopted last week – this is 37 fewer cats, 6 fewer dogs, and 6 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+0 from the previous week) and 9 dogs (+0 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat was humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 kitten failed to thrive and died in our care. 3 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans, and one dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week we received 67 surrender requests for cats and 110 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4 days for cats and 9.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/09/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/02/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
