Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, February 3rd, we had 274 animals in our care – this is 61 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 51 at our Carson Campus, 133 at our Reno Campus, and 90 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 64% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 57% capacity.

141 animals came into our campuses last week – 17 fewer than the previous week. NHS received 60 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+8 animals from the previous week), 11 Strays (-5 animals from the previous week) and 0 Good Samaritan Strays (+0 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 23 cats, 27 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

90 cats, 87 dogs, and 9 others were adopted last week – this is 36 more cats, 30 more dogs, and 1 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+1 from the previous week) and 9 dogs (+4 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons.

Last week we received 67 surrender requests for cats and 84 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 4.5 days for cats and 15 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 02/02/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 01/26/2025.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
