Hello Friends!

Trent (Chief Operations Officer) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, January 5th, we had 337 animals in our care – this is 54 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 50 at our Carson Campus, 186 at our Reno Campus, and 101 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 57% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 75% capacity.

177 animals came into our campuses last week – 54 more than the previous week. NHS received 65 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+23 animals from the previous week), 9 Strays (+4 animals from the previous week) and 7 Good Samaritan Strays (+4 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 30 cats, 25 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

65 cats, 63 dogs, and 6 others were adopted last week – this is 9 fewer cats, 15 more dogs, and 1 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 2 cats (-1 from the previous week) and 6 dogs (-4 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats were humanely euthanized for medical reasons. One dog died unassisted in our care. 3 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 35 surrender requests for cats and 52 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 7 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 01/05/2025.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 12/29/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
