Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, December 9, we had 368 animals in our care – this is 27 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 46 at our Carson Campus, 187 at our Reno Campus, and 137 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 34.48% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66.90% capacity.

143 animals came into our campuses last week – the same from the previous week. NHS received 67 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+19 animals from the previous week), 8 Strays (-5 animals from the previous week) and 7 Good Samaritan Strays (+2 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 24 cats, 21 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

98 cats, 67 dogs, and 0 others were adopted last week – this is 7 fewer cats, 20 more dogs, and 1 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 2 cats (+1 from the previous week) and 4 dogs (-5 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 1 cat and 2 dogs were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 29 surrender requests for cats and 59 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 7 days for cats and 6.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 12/08/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 12/01/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
