Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, December 2, we had 395 animals in our care – this is 30 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 43 at our Carson Campus, 201 at our Reno Campus, and 151 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 75.86% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 72.54% capacity. Currently 18 kennels at our Carson Campus are unusable due to an HVAC equipment malfunction.

143 animals came into our campuses last week – an 11% decrease from the previous week. NHS received 48 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-4 animals from the previous week), 13 Strays (-13 animal from the previous week) and 5 Good Samaritan Strays (-8 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 42 cats, 25 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

105 cats, 47 dogs, and 1 others were adopted last week – this is 20 fewer cats, 1 more dog, and 5 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 1 cats (-2 from the previous week) and 9 dogs (+2 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 32 surrender requests for cats and 62 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 21 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 12/01/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/24/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
