Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, November 25, we had 425 animals in our care – this is 37 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 44 at our Carson Campus, 205 at our Reno Campus, and 176 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 46.55% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 71.83% capacity.

161 animals came into our campuses last week – a 17% decrease from the previous week. NHS received 52 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-11 animals from the previous week), 26 Strays (+15 animal from the previous week) and 13 Good Samaritan Strays (-4 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 26 cats, 24 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

125 cats, 46 dogs, and 6 others were adopted last week – this is 3 more cats, 20 fewer dogs, and 3 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (-6 from the previous week) and 7 dogs (+2 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 2 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 71 surrender requests for cats and 68 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 5 days for cats and 15 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/24/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/17/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
