Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, November 18, we had 462 animals in our care – this is 21 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 53 at our Carson Campus, 189 at our Reno Campus, and 220 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 37.93% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 59.86% capacity.

193 animals came into our campuses last week – a 7% decrease from the previous week. NHS received 63 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+13 animals from the previous week), 11 Strays (-7 animal from the previous week) and 17 Good Samaritan Strays (-10 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 59 cats, 30 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

122 cats, 66 dogs, and 9 others were adopted last week – this is the same number of cats, 10 more dogs, and 9 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 9 cats (+7 from the previous week) and 5 dogs (-4 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 3 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dogs was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 53 surrender requests for cats and 62 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 11 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/17/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/10/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
