Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.
As of 8 am Monday, November 11, we had 483 animals in our care – this is 2 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 60 at our Carson Campus, 178 at our Reno Campus, and 245 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 41.38% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 64.79% capacity.
207 animals came into our campuses last week – a 19% increase from the previous week. NHS received 50 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+5 animals from the previous week), 18 Strays (+1 animal from the previous week) and 27 Good Samaritan Strays (+12 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 73 cats, 17 dogs, and 9 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.
122 cats, 56 dogs, and 0 others were adopted last week – this is 4 fewer cats, 6 more dogs, and 2 fewer other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 2 cats (+1 from the previous week) and 9 dogs (+1 from the previous week) with their owners.
Last week, 4 cats, and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 2 kittens and 1 dog failed to thrive and died unassisted in our care. 4 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and 2 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.
Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 62 surrender requests for cats and 83 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 9.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

- Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/10/2024.
- Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 11/03/2024.
- Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
- Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
- Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
