Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, October 20, we had 588 animals in our care – this is 13 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 49 at our Carson Campus, 213 at our Reno Campus, and 326 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 56.90% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 72.54% capacity.

220 animals came into our campuses last week – a 3% increase from the previous week. NHS received 46 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-7 animals from the previous week), 10 Strays (-6 animals from the previous week) and 36 Good Samaritan Strays (-7 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 72 cats, 43 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

146 cats, 57 dogs, and 10 others were adopted last week – this is 18 more cats, 2 fewer dogs, and 6 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+3 from the previous week) and 6 dogs (-2 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats and 1 dog were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 kitten failed to thrive and died unassisted in our care. 3 dogs was euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog was euthanized for behavioral failure to thrive.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 43 surrender requests for cats and 66 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 10 days for cats and 7 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/20/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/13/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
