Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, October 14, we had 601 animals in our care – this is 3 more animals compared to the previous week. We have 59 at our Carson Campus, 196 at our Reno Campus, and 346 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 53.45% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66.20% capacity.

213 animals came into our campuses last week – a 7% decrease from the previous week. NHS received 53 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (-23 animals from the previous week), 16 Strays (-14 animals from the previous week) and 43 Good Samaritan Strays (+7 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 56 cats, 37 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

128 cats, 59 dogs, and 4 others were adopted last week – this is 10 more cats, 3 fewer dogs, and 3 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 0 cats (-3 from the previous week) and 8 dogs (+3 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 3 cats were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 4 kittens and one puppy failed to thrive and died unassisted in our care. Two dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and animals, and 2 dogs were euthanized for aggression to animals.

Last week at our Reno Campus, we received 41 surrender requests for cats and 74 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 6 days for cats and 19.5 days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/13/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 10/06/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
