Population & Capacity
As of 7 pm Sunday, September 6th, we have 387 animals in our care – six more animals from the previous week. We have 18 at our Carson Campus, 186 at our Reno Campus, and 183 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 16% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 64% capacity.
Intakes
215 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 75 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (27 more animals from the previous week), seven Strays (two less than the previous week) and 22 Strays too young for adoption (five more from the previous week). We transferred 60 cats and 28 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 23 dogs were transferred from other partners.
Outcomes
97 cats, 74 dogs, and nine small animals were adopted last week – this is five less cats, 22 more dogs, and five more small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite five dogs with their owners (one more compared to the previous week).
13 animals were humanely euthanized last week; 11 were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and two were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.
Community Support
Last week we received 26 surrender requests for cats and 58 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was three days for cats and five days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
