Population & Capacity
As of 7pm Sunday, August 9th, we have 333 animals in our care – 17 less animals from the previous week. We have 28 at our Carson Campus, 193 at our Reno Campus, and 112 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 31% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 55% capacity.
Intakes
194 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 58 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (12 less animals from the previous week), 15 Strays (seven more than the previous week) and six Strays too young for adoption (one less from the previous week). We transferred 32 cats and 40 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 19 cats and 24 dogs were transferred from other partners.
Outcomes
104 cats, 70 dogs, and 10 small animals were adopted last week – this is 21 less cats, nine more dogs, and four more small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite four dogs with their owners (one less dog and one less cat compared to the previous week.
13 animals were humanely euthanized last week; five were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and eight were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.
Community Support
Last week we received 29 surrender requests for cats and 46 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was three days for cats and six days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
