Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, August 2nd, we have 350 animals in our care – seven less animals from the previous week. We have 33 at our Carson Campus, 182 at our Reno Campus, and 135 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 28% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 54% capacity.

Intakes
188 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 70 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (29 more animals from the previous week), 22 Strays (two more than the previous week) and five Strays too young for adoption (three less from the previous week). We transferred 37 cats and 45 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. Nine dogs were transferred from other partners.

Outcomes
125 cats, 61 dogs, and six small animals were adopted last week – this is 26 less cats and 15 more dogs compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite five dogs and one cat with their owners (one more dogs, one more cat, and one less small animal compared to the previous week and no change for cats).

Eight animals were humanely euthanized last week; four were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and four were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Community Support
Last week we received 28 surrender requests for cats and 47 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was four days for cats and six days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
