Hello Friends!

Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, August 19, we had 561 animals in our care – this is 30 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 62 at our Carson Campus, 196 at our Reno Campus, and 303 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 56.90% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66.90% capacity.

190 animals came into our campuses last week – an 16% decrease from the previous week. NHS received 48 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+9 animals from the previous week), 11 Strays (-4 animals from the previous week) and 59 Good Samaritan Strays (+22 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 44 cats, 24 dogs, and 0 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

129 cats, 66 dogs, and 8 others were adopted last week – this is 1 fewer cats, 10 more dogs, and 3 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 2 cats (+2 from the previous week) and 5 dogs (-3 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 4 cats were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 1 kitten failed to thrive and died unassisted in our care. 2 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans, and 2 dog were euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Definitions:

  • Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/18/2024.
  • Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 08/11/2024.
  • Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
  • Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
  • Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
