Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, July 12th, we have 495 animals in our care – 63 less animals from the previous week. We have 50 at our Carson Campus, 261at our Reno Campus, and 184 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 31% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 70% capacity.

172 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 54 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (three more animal from the previous week), 36 Strays (16 more than the previous week) and 18 Strays too young for adoption (eight less from the previous week). We transferred 29 cats and 29 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. Four cats and two dogs were transferred from other partners.

145 cats, 57 dogs, and one small animal were adopted last week – this is 22 more cats, two less dogs and no change to small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite seven dogs and one cat with their owners (three more dogs and one more cat compared to the previous week).

Six animals were humanely euthanized last week; three were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and three were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Last week we received 21 surrender requests for cats and 83 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was two days for cats and four days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
