Population & Capacity
As of 7pm Sunday, July 5th, we have 558 animals in our care – 29 less animals from the previous week. We have 53 at our Carson Campus, 254 at our Reno Campus, and 251 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 38% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66% capacity.
Intakes
181 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 51 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (four less animals from the previous week), 20 Strays (one more than the previous week) and 25 Strays too young for adoption (27 less from the previous week). We transferred 43 cats and 31 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 11 dogs were transferred from other partners.
Outcomes
123 cats, 59 dogs, and one small animal was adopted last week – this is 26 less cats, four more dogs and three less small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite four dogs with their owners (five less dogs and one less cat compared to the previous week).
12 animals were humanely euthanized last week; nine were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and three were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.
Community Support
Last week we received 28 surrender requests for cats and 79 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was five days for cats and six days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
