Trent (Director of Operations) with a Nevada Humane Society Metrics Monday update and some key information about last week.

As of 8 am Monday, July 15, we had 630 animals in our care – this is 67 fewer animals compared to the previous week. We have 79 at our Carson Campus, 217 at our Reno Campus, and 334 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 79.31% capacity and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 73.94% capacity. Reno’s dog kennels have been over 80% nearly every day this week. Such sustained high capacity impacts our ability to serve our community’s needs. A large adoption event provided relief but with high intakes we need sustained adoptions from our communities to continue.

206 animals came into our campuses last week – a 18% increase from the previous week. NHS received 39 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (+0 animals from the previous week), 17 Strays (+11 animals from the previous week) and 41 Good Samaritan Strays (+25 animals from the previous week). We also transferred in 50 cats, 43 dogs, and 8 other animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services.

152 cats, 75 dogs, and 6 others were adopted last week – this is 15 more cats, 31 more dogs, and 4 more other animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 3 cats (+2 from the previous week) and 7 dogs (+1 from the previous week) with their owners.

Last week, 6 cats and 2 dogs were humanely euthanized for medical reasons and 3 kittens failed to thrive and died unassisted in our care. 4 dogs were euthanized for aggression to humans and 1 dog was euthanized for aggression to humans and animals.

Definitions:

• Last week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 07/14/2024.
• Previous week: The period from Monday to Sunday ending on 07/07/2024.
• Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
• Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
• Good Samarian Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
