Population & Capacity
As of 7pm Sunday, April 26th, we have 421 animals in our care – 95 more animals from the previous week. We have 36 at our Carson Campus, 143 at our Reno Campus, and 242 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 30% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 54% capacity.
Intakes
215 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 72 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (19 more animals from the previous week), 18 Strays (no change from the previous week) and 30 Strays too young for adoption (27 less from the previous week). We transferred 55 cats and 33 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. Six dogs and one cat were transferred in from other partners.
Outcomes
51 cats, 54 dogs, and one small animal were adopted last week – this is four less cats, 17 less dogs and no change for small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite eight dogs with their owners (this is three less dogs and one less cat compared to the previous week).
15 animals were humanely euthanized last week; 13 were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and two were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.
Community Support
Last week we received 23 surrender requests for cats and 87 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was four days for cats and five days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
