Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, May 17th, we have 581 animals in our care – 61 more animals from the previous week. We have 31 at our Carson Campus, 190 at our Reno Campus, and 360 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 26% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 62% capacity.

Intakes

258 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 59 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (nine more animals from the previous week), 11Strays (10 less than the previous week) and 93 Strays too young for adoption (51 more from the previous week). We transferred 44 cats, 19 dogs, and one small animal from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 31 cats were transferred from other partners.

Outcomes

93 cats, 67 dogs, and one small animal were adopted last week – this is 15 more cats, eight more dogs and no change for small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite three dogs and three cats with their owners (three more cats compared to the previous week).
25 animals were humanely euthanized last week; 22 were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and three were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Community Support

Last week we received 25 surrender requests for cats and 82 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was four days for cats and five days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
