Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, April 19th, we have 326 animals in our care – 26 more animals from the previous week. We have 43 at our Carson Campus, 97 at our Reno Campus, and 186 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 41% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 44% capacity.

Intakes

187 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 53 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (eight less animals from the previous week), 18 Strays (three more from the previous week) and 57 Strays too young for adoption (45 more from the previous week). We transferred 21 cats and 26 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. 11 dogs and one cat were transferred in from other partners.

Outcomes

55 cats, 71 dogs, and one small animal were adopted last week – this is five less cats, four more dogs and one more small animal compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 11 dogs and one cat with their owners (this is five more dogs compared to the previous week).

18 animals were humanely euthanized last week; 12 were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and six were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Community Support

Last week we received 29 surrender requests for cats and 60 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was four days for cats and five days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.

• Owner/Guardian Surrenders – Animals surrender to NHS by the legal owners of the animal.
• Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS without a clear owner.
• Good Samaritan Strays – Animals found and turned into NHS who are younger than 8 weeks of age and too young to stay in shelter for a stray hold.
