Population & Capacity

As of 7am Monday, April 6th, we have 280 animals in our care – 56 more animals from the previous week. We have 35 at our Carson Campus, 125 at our Reno Campus, and 120 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 46% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 66% capacity.
Intakes
184 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 34 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (17 less animals from the previous week), 8 Strays (4 less than the previous week) and 40 Strays too young for adoption (28 more than the previous week). We transferred 20 cats, 30 dogs, and one small animal from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. We also transferred 16 cats and 20 dogs from other partners.

Outcomes

54 cats, 49 dogs and seven small animals were adopted last week – this is 13 more cats, 10 fewer dogs, 7 more small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite six dogs and one cat with their owners (this is one less dog).

Seven animals were humanely euthanized last week; six were due to illness, injuries or quality of life, and one was due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Community Support
Last week, we received 10 surrender requests for cats and 33 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was 5 days for cats and 4 days for dogs. Same-day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
