Population & Capacity
As of 7pm Sunday, March 9th, we have 227 animals in our care – 18 more animals from the previous week. We have 32 at our Carson Campus, 141 at our Reno Campus, and 54 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 36% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 50% capacity.
Intakes
149 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 58 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (16 more animals from the previous week), 13 Strays (one more animals than the previous week) and eight Strays too young for adoption (eight more from the previous week). We also transferred 27 cats, 21 dogs and two small animals from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. We also transferred nine dogs from another partner.
Outcomes
51 cats, 56 dogs and four small animals were adopted last week – this is four less cats, one less dog, and two more small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite 16 dogs, one cat and one small animal with their owners (seven more dogs, one less cat and no change for small animals compared to last week).
14 animals were humanely euthanized last week; 12 were due to illness, injuries or quality of life and two were due to behavior. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.
Community Support
Last week we received 31 surrender requests for cats and 55 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was four days for cats and two days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
