Population & Capacity

As of 7pm Sunday, March 1st, we have 209 animals in our care – 13 more animals from the previous week. We have 38 at our Carson Campus, 128 at our Reno Campus, and 43 in the care of our foster volunteers. The Carson Campus dog kennels are at 46% capacity, and the Reno Campus dog kennels are at 45% capacity.

Intakes

143 animals came into our campuses last week. NHS received 42 Owner/Guardian Surrenders (15 more animals from the previous week), 12 Strays (six more animals than the previous week) and zero Strays too young for adoption (no change from the previous week). We also transferred 28 cats and 24 dogs from our close partners at Washoe County Regional Animal Services. We also transferred 14 cats from another partner.

Outcomes

55 cats, 57 dogs and two small animals were adopted last week – this is six less cats, 20 more dogs, and five less small animals compared to the previous week. We were able to reunite nine dogs, two cats and one small animal with their owners (five more dogs, one less cat and one more small animal compared to last week).

Four animals were humanely euthanized last week; all due to illness, injuries or quality of life. As the community’s safety net, we take these decisions to heart. They are made only when all other options have been exhausted, and always with kindness, respect, and the goal of preventing suffering. These moments are incredibly difficult for our team; each one weighs heavily, as our staff care deeply about every animal that comes through our doors.

Community Support

Last week we received 34 surrender requests for cats and 65 surrender requests for dogs. The median time between a completed application to surrender appointment last week was one day for cats and four days for dogs. Same day emergency surrender appointments are available every day for situations that require immediate relinquishment.
