Lover Boy: An Uplifting Tale of Collaboration
We are proud and thrilled to bring you this remarkable tale of compassion and collaboration between our team at Nevada Humane Society (NHS) and Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) to save a beloved feline named Lover Boy. This heartwarming story highlights the powerful impact of collaboration, community support, and kindness!
A Call for Help
On May 21st, 2024, we received a call from WCRAS regarding a welfare concern for Lover Boy, a cat who had suffered a traumatic injury. Degloving in cats refers to a severe injury where the skin is removed from a body part, often exposing muscles and tendons underneath. This can occur due to traumatic events, such as being caught in machinery or being attacked by other animals. Degloving injuries require immediate veterinary attention to address pain, prevent infection, and consider surgical options for skin repair or reconstruction. Prompt care is crucial for recovery and to help preserve the cat’s quality of life.
His owner, a disabled veteran living in a motel on a limited social security income, was desperately seeking veterinary care but had exhausted his resources. Although he managed to obtain pain medication from Blue Pearl (SVS), he could not afford the necessary treatment.
WCRAS recognized the dire situation and quickly realized Lover Boy urgently needed medical attention. Through the remarkable CARES program offered by WCRAS – which assists with medical care for pets in need – their team was determined to get Lover Boy the treatment he so desperately needed.
The Power of Collaboration
It was clear to everyone who met them that Lover Boy and his owner shared a profound bond, one built on love, trust, and unwavering companionship. The gentle way his owner spoke to him and the way Lover Boy purred softly, nuzzling into his hand, showed just how much they leaned on each other for comfort during tough times.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, Shyanne Schull, Director of Washoe County Regional Animal Services, reached out to NHS CEO Jerleen Bryant for assistance. We immediately agreed to open a next-day appointment for Lover Boy, demonstrating our shared commitment to the well-being of all pets in our community.
WCRAS helped cover the cost of Lover Boy’s treatment through their CARES program. The collaboration between our organizations was seamless, ensuring that Lover Boy received the care he needed without delay.
A Life Saved
Thanks to the swift actions and teamwork of WCRAS and NHS, Lover Boy underwent successful amputation surgery. This procedure alleviated his pain and gave him a new lease on life. Lover Boy’s owner expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support and compassion we provided. Our partnership with WCRAS highlights the incredible difference we can make when community organizations come together to support those in need.
Compassion & Collaboration Can Save Lives
Lover Boy’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and collaboration. It reminds us that, with a little help and a lot of heart, we can overcome even the most challenging situations. At NHS and WCRAS, together we exemplify the kind of community spirit that saves lives and brings hope to pet owners and their beloved animals.
