The Joy of October and Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month is an initiative celebrated nationwide to promote the adoption of dogs from shelters. It’s a month dedicated to raising awareness about the millions of dogs in shelters who are waiting for loving homes. For many animal welfare advocates and pet lovers, this month is a reminder of the joy and companionship that dogs bring into our lives. Adopting a dog not only provides them with a loving home but also enriches your life with unconditional love and loyalty.
For those considering getting a pet, October is a fantastic time to visit a shelter and meet some of the amazing dogs that are looking for homes.
Nevada Day Event: Home Means a New Friend
Nevada Day is a unique holiday that celebrates the state’s admission to the Union. This year, the Nevada Humane Society is combining the spirit of Nevada Day with the heartwarming spirit of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by hosting a fee-waived adoption event called “Home Means a New Friend.” This event is all about finding forever homes for adult animals who have been waiting for more than 14 days.
If you’re in Carson City or Reno, you’re in for a treat. Saturday, October 26th, the Carson City Campus will be open starting at 1:00 PM, while the Reno Campus will offer this special during regular hours from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. This is your chance to make this Nevada Day one to remember by adding a new furry family member to your household.

Why Adopt a Shelter Dog?
Adopting a shelter dog is a fulfilling experience for many reasons. First, it gives a deserving animal a second chance at a happy life. Many dogs in shelters have been rescued from difficult situations and are in need of love and care. By adopting, you’re giving a dog the opportunity to experience a loving home environment, often for the first time.
Additionally, adopting a shelter dog can improve your own well-being. Dogs are known for their ability to reduce stress, encourage physical activity, and provide emotional support. They quickly become beloved members of the family, offering companionship and joy.
A Day at the Nevada Day Parade
Before heading to the adoption event, make sure to check out the Nevada Humane Society at the Nevada Day Parade. It’s a fun and festive way to show support for the incredible work the Humane Society does. The parade is a great opportunity to learn more about the organization’s mission and see some of the adorable dogs that are up for adoption.
The parade is filled with community spirit and is a perfect way to start your day before heading to one of the adoption campuses. Whether you’re an animal lover or just looking for a fun day out, the Nevada Day Parade is not to be missed.
Come join us at the Nevada Day Parade located on Carson St. in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The parade route will go from William St. to Stewart St.
How to Prepare for Your New Pet
Bringing home a new pet is an exciting experience, but it’s important to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your new furry friend:
- Pet-Proof Your Home: Make sure your home is safe for your new pet by removing any hazards and setting up a comfortable space for them to relax.
- Gather Supplies: Stock up on essential supplies like food, bowls, a leash, a collar, toys, and a bed.
- Schedule a Vet Visit: Arrange for a veterinary check-up soon after adoption to ensure your new pet is healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
- Establish a Routine: Dogs thrive on routine, so establish a schedule for feeding, walks, and playtime.
- Be Patient: Transitioning to a new home can be overwhelming for a pet. Be patient and give them time to adjust to their new environmen (we like to follow thee 3x3x3 rule).
