Havasu’s Story of Hope and Healing

To kick things off, we’re excited to share an update on Havasu, an unforgettable dog whose path to happiness is a powerful story of courage, resilience, and love that is sure to touch your heart. 

Havasu’s story began long before he arrived at the Nevada Humane Society just over a year ago. For months, Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) received reports of a stray dog living in a drainpipe in Reno, struggling to survive on his own. Despite numerous efforts by animal services to rescue him, Havasu’s knowledge of the drainpipe’s escape routes, and his fear of humans made it incredibly difficult to bring him to safety. 

Thanks to a unique collaboration with Reno Public Works, a breakthrough happened. It took patience, creativity, and a lot of heart, but Havasu was finally rescued. He arrived at our Reno Campus shortly after, where he was welcomed into a loving foster home to begin his journey to heal, build trust, and slowly overcome his fear of humans. 

Months later, Havasu found his forever home on a picturesque ranch in Gardnerville, where he could finally run freely and experience the love he had always longed for. When asked how they’re adjusting to their new family member, the family shared that they can hardly remember life before Havasu. He was the missing piece that perfectly completes their family.

It’s a small, yet deeply meaningful ritual, a beautiful reflection of the love, trust, and security he has finally found in his forever home.
