How Fostering Changed My Life (Alexis’s Journey with Drakeo)

Hi, I’m Alexis, and I would like to share how fostering changed my life after losing my dog in June. The heartbreak was something I never thought I’d fully recover from, and for a long time, I wasn’t sure I was ready for another dog. But eventually, the idea of fostering kept coming to mind to heal without the full commitment of adoption. As the months passed and summer began to fade into fall, I finally felt ready to open my heart to a dog again. I started following local shelters on Instagram, hoping the right dog would pop up. It was during a trip to Yosemite when I was scrolling through my feed that I saw a post from the Nevada Humane Society about a dog named Drakeo in need of a break from the kennel. Without hesitation, I called the shelter and within hours, I was on my way to meet him.

From the moment I met Drakeo, I knew he was special. He was sweet, calm, and clearly in need of some time outside the chaos of the kennel. As soon as he settled into my home, I could see the relief in his eyes. I was giving him a space to relax and unwind and I was receiving just as much in return. 

Drakeo made himself right at home, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that he took snuggling very seriously. He’d climb onto my lap at every chance he got, wanting nothing more than to be close to me. The first night, I had set up a kennel for him in my room, but when I went to bed, he jumped right onto the bed and curled up next to me. I didn’t mind one bit! We snuggled all night, and I was reminded of the joy a dog can bring. 

After a few days, I could tell that Drakeo was feeling more comfortable, and his true personality began to shine. He was curious, playful, and affectionate. I knew at that point, without a doubt, that I was going to adopt him. He had already claimed his spot in my heart, and he wasn’t going anywhere. 

Now, a few weeks in, Drakeo, now named Dennis, is officially my sidekick. We’re enjoying the snuggles, the adventures, and all the little moments in between. He’s exactly what I needed in my life, and I’m so grateful to have him. 

But none of this would have been possible without donors like YOU! Your support gave me the opportunity to foster, and ultimately adopt, a dog who desperately needed a home. The Nevada Humane Society team works hard to help dogs like Dennis find the love and care they deserve, and I want to ensure they can continue to care for pets, find them homes, and save lives.
