Barney arrived at the Nevada Humane Society’s Carson City Campus on December 26, 2023, as a frightened stray, lost and unsure of his surroundings. But beneath his fear, was a gentle, loving soul, ready to trust again and find his place in the world.
After a short stay on stray hold, he was neutered and made available for adoption. However, despite being a sweet and friendly dog, Barney struggled with some handling issues and interactions with other dogs. For reasons beyond his control, he didn’t find a home as quickly as we had hoped. Days turned into weeks, then months, and before we knew it, Barney had been with us for 178 days, the longest of any pet in our care.
As the days passed, we worked with him, helped him grow, and kept our hope alive that the right person would come for him. But as much as we wanted to see him go to a loving home, no one came. That was until July 20, 2024, six months after Barney first arrived.
A woman walked into our shelter and said, “That’s my dog.” At first, we were skeptical, but her story quickly revealed that Barney, whom she had named Poggy, was the dog she had loved before life separated them. She had moved to Arizona in December, leaving him with a family member, only to learn in January that he had escaped.
Months passed, and she never stopped thinking about Poggy. Then, while she was back in town for a brief visit in July, she saw a post about Barney on our social media. The moment she recognized him, she knew she had to come back for him.
When she arrived and saw Barney again, it was as if time had stood still. We brought him out to meet her, and he lit up with excitement. It was obvious that Barney remembered her. The bond was undeniable. After months of waiting, it was finally time for Barney to go home.
Their reunion was a special reminder about the bond shared between humans and animals . Sometimes, the journey is long but love always finds its way. For Barney, it came when he least expected it, through a simple post on social media that brought him back to the family he’d never truly lost.
But for every heartwarming reunion, there are still many pets waiting for their second chance, and they need your help. Will you consider donating today to help give more pets the chance to have a brighter future, just like Barney?
Thank you for reuniting pets with their owners. This life-saving work could not be done without you!
